Documentary banned in Malaysia

The Last Communist is a semi-musical documentary about the life and legacy of Chin Peng, exiled leader of the banned Communist Party of Malaysia. The film premiered at the Berlin Film Festival in February. It features interviews with people in the towns Chin Peng lived in, interspersed with songs that were composed in the mould of old-fashioned propaganda films.
According to director Amir Muhammad, the Malaysian ambassador who attended the Berlin screening enjoyed the film. In March, the film got through the National Film Censorship Board of Malaysia without any cuts. But on May 5th, Home Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Radzi Sheikh Ahmad suddenly retracted the censors' approval.
